My name is Nicallette Swigart and I'm currently nineteen years old, studying for my General Education degree at Butte Community college. While struggling enough trying to make it by each day, I also have to battle a dental disease known as Dentinogenesis Imperfecta: This condition causes teeth to be discolored (most often a blue-gray or yellow-brown color) and translucent. Teeth are also weaker than normal, making them prone to rapid wear, breakage, and loss.
For eight years this condition has stolen away my health and confidence. I'm restricted on the foods in which I can consume, since anything hard or firm holds the potential for tooth breakage. My back teeth are unable to chew anything, so I have resorted to using my tongue against the roof of my mouth, which has created sores along my tongue as a result.
Collectively with the eating problem I don't feel confident in myself and haven't for a long period of time. I'm constantly attempting to conceal my teeth and often I'm afraid to look people in the eye, weary of any judgement they may pass because of my dental appearance.
I've never used or partaken in drugs of any form, yet I'm been told my teeth resemble those of drug addicts when I was only in Jr. High. Of course this isn't surprising considering my dental condition wasn't even known until after I had undergone several years of restorative dental care in efforts to fix my problem. I've had treatments (such as Root Canals, Crowns, Build Ups, Extractions, and Gum Planning...) at Access, Western, and Ampla Dental here in Chico, CA.
Sadly none of the procedures are able to hold. Out of the nine root canals I had done at Access Dental, they never cleaned out the roots correctly, allowing the abscesses inside to fester and grow. I presently have seven failing teeth that previously had root canals now with large infections that are effecting the nerves located along the right side of my jaw. This causes tremendous pain and discomfort, I often have to take Advil, use warm rags, and an Oral gel to dull down the throbbing.
Thankfully my teeth were finally discovered to be abnormal when a doctor at Western Dental, Mr. Williams, recommended I see a specialist. He looked at the Xrays of my mouth and was concerned. In his words he didn't understand the root structure of my teeth and wasn't prepare to proceed without the guidance of a specialist.
My mother and I attempted to reach UCLA, Pacific Dental University, and several other Dental facilities. None of them take Medical and I was denied access to them.
It wasn't until I got a recommendation to Dr. Fred Hanosh in Paradise and Chico that I finally began to believe I had a savior in my crisis. He and his team have been wonderful since my first visit, however, I am in no position to fiance my care program! I'm on FASFA for college, searching for a job, and have no stable living condition. My father is on state disability for shattering his foot, my mother is willing to help me with whatever money she has, but of course they need money to eat and pay the bills. My boyfriend's family is supportive as well, but I know my teeth are on a deadline which will approach soon.
I have several infections in my teeth which are causing constant discomfort, my insecurities are pushing me out of the social interactions with my friends and eating has become a paranoia. I look at food with hesitation, wondering if that one item will damage my teeth further. I'm in a shell of doubt and constant pain, I need help!
Dr. Hanosh has written out a care package for my condition which entitles a total extraction of my bottom teeth, an immediate denture (hopefully later to be made a permanent attached denture) and complete reconstruction of my upper teeth.
All of this calculates out to be around $40,000.00 USD! Not to mention the treatments I'll need afterwards to ensure my mouth doesn't reject the procedures.
If anyone is able to donate anything to my cause I'd be very grateful. I'm not asking for a large sum to be donated by one person, but if anything is available and you want to help contribute, please be so kind.
After my work is completed, I'd like to help other people suffering from Dental diseases, so hopefully, together we can create a better funded effort for everyone struggling through their dental care.
